Jane Chu, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, joined joyous members of the Silver State’s arts community to celebrate the Nevada Arts Council’s 50th Anniversary on March 9, 2017. The sold-out 50th Anniversary Awards Dinner, held at the Nevada Museum of Art, honored the Nevada State Senate, the Nevada State Assembly and the Office of the Governor for establishing the NAC in 1967. The evening included a Folk Arts Showcase, a performance by singer/cellist Shana Tucker, comments by Chairman Chu and Bob Lynch, CEO of Americans for the Arts, and recognition of the agency’s executive director, Susan Boskoff, and her nearly 25 years of leadership.
Gabrielle Hunt, a Yerington High School junior, was named Nevada’s 2017 Poetry Out Loud State Champion at the 12th Annual Nevada State Finals, held in the KNPB Channel 5 studio on March 11, 2017. She receives $1,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to represent Nevada at the National Finals in Washington, D.C. in late April. Her school also received $1,000 for poetry books and literary programs. In D.C., Hunt will vie for the title of National Champion and $50,000 in awards and school stipends against competitors from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
Elko High School junior Cache Black placed second, and Douglas County High School junior Lea Gifford finished third. Each receives $500, and $500 for their schools to support literary programs.
This year, more than 2,800 Nevada high school students participated in Poetry Out Loud. Nevada Arts Council Executive Director Susan Boskoff will retire on March 31, 2017, after 24 years of service to the State of Nevada. “Words cannot express our gratitude to Susan for her dedication to the Arts Council, our constituents and to the state of Nevada. Guiding the agency with wisdom, passion, and an understanding of the ever-changing needs of our field, for many her name is synonymous with the Nevada Arts Council,” said Julia, chair of the Nevada Arts Council board. The Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery features the work of Gig Depio in Negotiating the Influence of Culture, Jan. 9 – March 17, 2017. A Visual Arts Fellowship recipient in 2016, Depio focuses on the convergence of cultures within the diverse population of Las Vegas.
Due to winter weather, NAC has rescheduled the reception and artist talk to Thursday, March 2, 5:00 pm to 7:30 p.m. Depio’s discussion begins at 6:15 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.
