2019 NEVADA POETRY OUT LOUD PROGRAM

More than 3,500 high school-aged students from Nevada’s public, private, charter, parochial and alternative schools, and home school associations participated in the 2019 Nevada Poetry Out Loud Program. Focusing on our rich literary heritage through memorization and performance of classic and contemporary poetry, Nevada Poetry Out Loud is a program of the Nevada Arts Council, presented in partnership with The National Endowment for the ArtsThe Poetry Foundation,  NV EnergyNevada Department of Education, Nevada School Districts, and KNPB. 

After participating at the school and/or district level, semi-finalists traveled to Reno on March 16 for the 2019 Nevada Poetry Out Loud State Finals at KNPB Channel 5 studios in Reno.

Vanessa Aponte, a senior at Legacy High School in North Las Vegas, is the 2019 Nevada Poetry Out Loud Champion.

Aponte receives a $600 scholarship and will now move on to represent Nevada in the National Poetry Out Loud competition April 30 to May 1 in Washington, D.C.  The National Champion receives $20,000, with a total of $50,000 in scholarship and school prizes awarded.

Sparks High School senior Noemi Valdez finished in second place and receives a $450 scholarship, and Elko High School senior Mikayla de Guzman finished third and receives a $350 scholarship.

Poetry Out Loud is a program of the Nevada Arts Council, The state finals were recorded by KNPB and a 30-minute program will be televised in the weeks ahead.

The Nevada State Champion heads to Washington, D.C., to compete at the 14th Poetry Out Loud National Finals, April 29 – May 1, 2019.
