Two noted Nevada fellows to talk poetry at free program May 7 at WNCfarchernevadaculture
Two talented Nevada poets earned special recognition from the Nevada Arts Council through fellowships granted in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Arts in 2015. Laura Wetherington and Jared Stanley will speak of their work and read poetry during a free program and reception at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 7 at Western Nevada College, Main Gallery, 2201 West College Parkway, Carson City.
Each poet was awarded a 12-month fellowship that is intended to provide artists with time, materials and living expenses to share and develop their work. Wetherington teaches at Sierra Nevada College and is advisor for the Sierra Nevada Review. She also earned a 2014 artist grant from the Sierra Arts Foundation. Her first book of poems, “A Map Predetermined and Chance,” was selected by judge C.S. Giscombe for the National Poetry Series, a competition that selects and publishes five winning manuscripts per year.
Stanley writes of varied topics and is working on poetry of military mysticism and the obligations of wildflowers. The Reno resident teaches at Sierra Nevada College and recently contributed to “It Calls from the Creek,” Surrender” and “Lake Lahontan’s Maritime Legacy.” He is the author of two poetry books, “The Weeds” and “Book Made of Forest.”
The NAC Artist Fellowship Program was created in 1988 to encourage the pursuit of artistic excellence by providing financial support to Nevada artists. The fellowships may be awarded to artists at any stage of their career development. Since the program’s inception, NAC has recognized the work of 167 actors, dancers, choreographers, composers, filmmakers, musicians, photographers, playwrights, poets, sculptors, theater directors, visual artists and writers. By acknowledging outstanding artistic accomplishment, the fellowships promotes public awareness and appreciation of the role of the artist in society.
