Max Bunnell featured artist at Lost City Museum in June

OVERTON, Nevada – The man who started the Moapa Valley Art Guild in 1959 is the featured artist in this month’s exhibit at The Lost City Museum.

The watercolors, oil paintings, land and seascapes of Max Bunnell will be exhibited throughout June.

In 1959, as a way to increase community involvement in the arts, Bunnell conceived the idea of a community art guild. He gathered artwork from his many artist friends and acquaintances in the Moapa Valley region and included the work of his students.

He presented this work to the town in the form of a spring show. Members of the new guild traveled as far west as Laguna Beach, California and as far north as Salt Lake City, Utah to transport paintings for the show.

The Guild now holds a number of exhibits and events during the year including fundraisers to finance art scholarships for Moapa Valley High School students. It also hosts the Pomegranate Festival which is scheduled Nov. 2-3, 2019 in Logandale.

Bunnell graduated from Brigham Young University with undergraduate degrees in art and education and a master’s degree in fine arts. He also studied silver smithing at California State University, Long Beach and crafting jewelry in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The Lost City Museum actively engages people in understanding and celebrating Nevada’s natural and cultural heritage. One of seven museums managed by the Nevada Division of Museums and History, an agency of the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, it is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily at 721 S. Moapa Valley Blvd., Overton. Admission is $5, children 17 and younger and members enter free. Take Interstate 15 north to exit 93. Access is also available from Lake Mead National Recreation Area or the Valley of Fire State Park. For more information, call the museum at (702) 397-2193 or visit Facebook.
