Planning your Trip
A field trip to the Nevada Historical Society can be integrated into Nevada history units throughout the year.
Museum exhibits give students the opportunity to ask questions about the past and find their own answers. The Nevada Historical Society is currently the only
history museum in Reno that offers tours to school groups free of charge.
Members of the Nevada Historical Society Docent Council are responsible for giving tours of the Historical Society galleries. The Docents are trained
volunteers who, using the Historical Society galleries, give a general tour of Nevada History.
If you would like the field trip to emphasize a specific aspect of Nevada history, please let us know when you make your field trip arrangements, and we will attempt to accommodate you.
Things to keep in mind:
Tours at the Nevada Historical Society are subject to availability of volunteers. Tours need to be scheduled with at least two weeks advanced notice.
Please have a day and time in mind for your visit, and one or two alternate dates. The months of October and May are particularly busy months for field trips, so we ask that you make reservations for those months as far in advance as possible. Due to the proximity of other great resources such as the Fleischmann Planetarium, the W.M. Keck Museum, and the Wilbur May Museum, to name a few, many schools and groups find pairing with another agency maximizes bus space, learning opportunities and field trip time.
Please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the start of your tour. This allows for early organization and no loss of tour time. Tours last 60 minutes, but can be tailored to work with groups who have more or less time. We can accommodate a total of 45 students at one time. Groups larger than 20 will be split into two smaller groups.
Teachers and/or parent volunteers must accompany children during the entire tour.
We kindly ask that any date or time change requests be made with as much notice as possible – our
Docents plan your tours well in advance and appreciate your consideration.
